Hidden Gems

Posted on April 2, 2010

As I ponder offering a round of sage advice (smirking allowed), it occurred to me you may already have that exceptional pearl of wisdom filed safely away in some folder or hidden on the page of a book. It may be tucked away in those great conference proceedings you’ve meticulously kept for future reference. When was the last time you actually looked at what you’ve accumulated? Do you even know what you have?

I find myself snatching great ideas from practically every thing I read. I have marketing strategies, management plans, writing guidelines, research tips, and technology updates stashed in every form imaginable. I have folders full of stuff I still haven’t finished reading. I keep thinking I’ll get around to putting these gems into practice, but before I do, my great intentions get lost in the busyness of life.  I must remind myself the purpose isn’t just to collect stray bits of knowledge that might come in handy. It’s also to act on great suggestions.

So here’s my tip for the week: Go back and look through your stash of guidelines,  instructions, tips and recommendations, be it for writing, marketing, researching, budgeting, dieting, dog washing, whatever. And, then, act on one piece of great advice. Put it into practice. Make it part of your routine. Incorporate it into your thinking. At the very least, contemplate how to organize or consolidate all those good snippets before accumulating more.
